SUMMARY:Distinguished Speaker Series: Ari Friedlaender
DESCRIPTION:Distinguished Speaker: Ari Friedlaender\nWorld renowned whale researcher\, Ari Friedlaender\, will be sharing how he uses new technology to understand and conserve baleen whales in changing environments. \nCome learn from a whale expert and ask your questions! \nAri is an ecologist with a primary interest in understanding the relationship between the foraging behavior of marine mammals and their prey. He works on a wide range of marine mammal species including baleen and toothed whales and dolphins across a range of geographic regions. Ari has long-term ecological research projects ongoing in Alaska\, California\, Massachusetts\, North Carolina\, and Antarctica. He has helped in the development of tag technology and analytical and visualization tools to better understand the underwater movements and behaviors of marine mammals. \n       \n \n \n \n \n \n Click to learn more at: Friedlaender Lab \n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday\, March 5th \n4:00pm – 6:00pm \n$15  – General \n$10 – Sea Star and above members \nSea Star and above members: use coupon code speaker+member number (ex: speaker100101011) \n \n Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT ARI FRIEDLAENDER \nFor his dissertation research\, Ari used geospatial tools to quantify how the distribution of cetaceans related to environmental variables in Antarctica. Ari’s lab focuses on developing new telemetry applications to elucidate the underwater behavior of marine mammals. In Antarctica\, Ari is part of the Long-Term Ecological Research program at Palmer Station to better understand the ecological roles of cetaceans in a rapidly changing environment. In Alaska and Massachusetts\, Ari’s research focuses on variability in the foraging strategies of humpback whales in relation to changes in their prey. In California\, Ari is part of the SoCal Behavioral Response Study to understand the impacts of anthropogenic sound on a variety of cetacean species. Along with this research\, Ari is an active member of the Society for Marine Mammalogy\, acting as an associate editor for Marine Mammal Science and serving on the Conservation Committee. Ari is also a principal investigator in the Southern Ocean Research Partnership to conduct non-lethal research on cetaceans in the Southern Ocean. \n \n \n \n \n \n Additional Information: \nParking is free at the Ocean Institute in our main lot located at 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive. \nYour ticket includes admission to the Speaker Series event for the date listed. \nLight snacks and refreshments are included in the ticket price. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID POLICIES: \nStaff and participants must wear face masks. Ocean Institute has increased the frequency of sanitation on public surfaces – door handles\, restrooms\, etc. Restrooms are available on-site at the Ocean Institute. SUMMARY:Distinguished Speaker Series: Marah j. Hardt (Sex in the Sea)
DESCRIPTION:Distinguished Speaker: Marah J. Hardt!\nSex in the Sea uniquely connects the timeless topic of sex with the timely issue of sustainable oceans. Through overfishing\, climate change\, and ocean pollution we are disrupting the creative procreation that drives the wild abundance of life in the ocean. \nForget the Kama Sutra. When it comes to inventive sex acts\, just look to the sea. There we find the elaborate mating rituals of armored lobsters; giant right whales engaging in a lively threesome whilst holding their breath; full moon sex parties of groupers and daily mating blitzes by blueheaded wrasse. Deep-sea squid perform inverted 69s\, while hermaphrodite sea slugs link up in giant sex loops. From doubly endowed sharks to the maze-like vaginas of some whales\, Sex in the Sea is a journey unlike any other to explore the staggering ways life begets life beneath the waves. \n \n \n \n \n \n Tuesday\, February 22nd – A Virtual Event!  \n6:00pm – 8:00pm \n$10  – General \n$5 – Sea Star and above members \nSea Star and above members: use coupon code speaker+member number (ex: speaker100101011) \nJoin us from home for this VIRTUAL Distinguished Speaker Series event! Hardt is a scientist\, strategist\, and storyteller working to design the next generation of equitable and effective solutions for healthy oceans and coastal communities. Marah focuses on high-impact projects that tackle complex ocean challenges—from the global overfishing crisis to climate change impacts on coral reefs. She’s adept at applying interdisciplinary approaches to research and analysis to understand challenges and develop opportunities for driving change across industry\, government\, and non-profit sectors. In particular\, she effectively engages leaders from the science\, business\, design\, and art communities to foster new thinking and solutions for tackling the most pressing problems in ocean conservation\, especially overfishing and climate change. An experienced public speaker\, Marah effectively communicates ideas and influences audiences from board rooms to international trade shows to scientific conferences. \nHer book\, SEX IN THE SEA (St. Martin’s Press\, 2016) was an Oprah book pick and has been translated into four languages. Her TEDx talk was featured on the TED podcast and currently has nearly 2 million views. \nhttp://www.sexinthesea.org \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Additional Information: \nParking is free at the Ocean Institute in our main lot located at 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive. \nYour ticket includes admission to the Speaker Series event for the date listed. \nLight snacks and refreshments are included in the ticket price. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID POLICIES: \nStaff and participants must wear face masks. Ocean Institute has increased the frequency of sanitation on public surfaces – door handles\, restrooms\, etc. Restrooms are available on-site at the Ocean Institute.
