SUMMARY:Distinguished Speaker Series: Chugey Sepulveda
DESCRIPTION:The Ocean Institute’s Distinguished Speaker Series\, presented by the Nicholas Endowment\, brings interesting innovations\, real-world research\, exotic experiences\, and delightful discoveries to the surface through powerful presentations from an ocean of experts. Speakers present on a variety of topics that align with our monthly themes. \n\nAdmission includes light snacks and refreshments.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Distinguished Speaker: Chugey Sepulveda\n \nSepulveda will introduce and discuss seafood sustainability\, with specific reference to the waters off Southern California. He will touch upon recent advancements made by PIER and California managers\, including recent efforts to increase local fishing opportunities and promote sustainable seafood production. Sepulveda will also highlight those fisheries that have made strides towards meeting sustainability goals and discuss areas where we\, as consumers\, need to help make a difference in conserving and promoting healthy fisheries. Sepulveda will also entertain questions and hopefully help lead a productive and informative dialog about our local resources and how they are currently managed. \n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday\, August 20th \n4:00pm – 5:30pm \n$15  – General \n$10 – Members \n \n Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n				 About Chugey Sepulveda \nChugey Sepulveda is the director of research and education at the Pfleger Institute of Environmental Research (PIER) in Oceanside\, California. PIER is a non-profit research institute dedicated to the advancement of sustainable fisheries management through applied field research and public education. Sepulveda is a California native that has spent all of his adult life working on or near the water. He has a Masters degree from Cal State Fullerton and he received his PhD from Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 2005. As a fisherman and scientist\, Sepulveda is interested in pelagic fish movement patterns\, ecology and sustainable fishery development. At PIER\, he has studied the physiology of open ocean fish in an effort to develop alternative fishing gear. In addition to this\, he has worked to improve the management of impacted Southern California species such as White Seabass. Sepulveda has a long history working collaboratively with fishermen\, researchers and managers to address resource concerns and bycatch issues in current day fisheries. Everyday his work proves how science is being used to protect fisheries and the species they depend on.

SUMMARY:Distinguished Speaker Series: John O'Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:The Ocean Institute’s Distinguished Speaker Series\, presented by the Nicholas Endowment\, brings interesting innovations\, real-world research\, exotic experiences\, and delightful discoveries to the surface through powerful presentations from an ocean of experts. Speakers present on a variety of topics that align with our monthly themes. \n\nAdmission includes light snacks and refreshments.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Distinguished Speaker: John O’Sullivan\nJohn O’Sullivan\, Director of Collections at Monterey Bay Aquarium\, to speak about the 20-year research program on Juvenile White Sharks along the Eastern Pacific.  \nAs Director of the Collections Department\, O’Sullivan possesses extensive knowledge of aquarium collection requirements\, methods\, species\, and seasonality locations\, including transport\, disease recognition\, treatments\, and general husbandry. O’Sullivan directly conducts research and development on a wide variety of species regionally and internationally.  \n \n \n \n \n \n Sunday\, July 24th \n4:00pm – 5:30pm \n$15  – General \n$10 – Members \n \n Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n				 About John O’Sullivan \nHis presentation will include information about his 20-year-long research. From 2001-2020\, the Monterey Bay Aquarium led an international research effort to understand the life cycle\, ecology\, and behavior of young and juvenile white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) in Southern California. During the course of this research\, 79 electronic tags (59 PAT and 20 SPOT) were placed on 63 White Sharks to record the species’ movement. The collected data helped document the young sharks’ seasonal migrations\, nursery locations\, fishery interactions\, and habitat shifts arising from ocean warming in the regional waters of Baja California\, Mexico\, and California\, U.S.A. This data spawned dozens of research papers and helped inform local\, state\, and federal fisheries managers in the U.S. and Mexico on the collective knowledge of juvenile White Sharks.  This program supported the Aquarium’s mission to inspire the conservation of the ocean.

SUMMARY:Distinguished Speaker Series: Ari Friedlaender
DESCRIPTION:Distinguished Speaker: Ari Friedlaender\nWorld renowned whale researcher\, Ari Friedlaender\, will be sharing how he uses new technology to understand and conserve baleen whales in changing environments. \nCome learn from a whale expert and ask your questions! \nAri is an ecologist with a primary interest in understanding the relationship between the foraging behavior of marine mammals and their prey. He works on a wide range of marine mammal species including baleen and toothed whales and dolphins across a range of geographic regions. Ari has long-term ecological research projects ongoing in Alaska\, California\, Massachusetts\, North Carolina\, and Antarctica. He has helped in the development of tag technology and analytical and visualization tools to better understand the underwater movements and behaviors of marine mammals. \n       \n \n \n \n \n \n Click to learn more at: Friedlaender Lab \n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday\, March 5th \n4:00pm – 6:00pm \n$15  – General \n$10 – Sea Star and above members \nSea Star and above members: use coupon code speaker+member number (ex: speaker100101011) \n \n Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT ARI FRIEDLAENDER \nFor his dissertation research\, Ari used geospatial tools to quantify how the distribution of cetaceans related to environmental variables in Antarctica. Ari’s lab focuses on developing new telemetry applications to elucidate the underwater behavior of marine mammals. In Antarctica\, Ari is part of the Long-Term Ecological Research program at Palmer Station to better understand the ecological roles of cetaceans in a rapidly changing environment. In Alaska and Massachusetts\, Ari’s research focuses on variability in the foraging strategies of humpback whales in relation to changes in their prey. In California\, Ari is part of the SoCal Behavioral Response Study to understand the impacts of anthropogenic sound on a variety of cetacean species. Along with this research\, Ari is an active member of the Society for Marine Mammalogy\, acting as an associate editor for Marine Mammal Science and serving on the Conservation Committee. Ari is also a principal investigator in the Southern Ocean Research Partnership to conduct non-lethal research on cetaceans in the Southern Ocean. \n \n \n \n \n \n Additional Information: \nParking is free at the Ocean Institute in our main lot located at 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive. \nYour ticket includes admission to the Speaker Series event for the date listed. \nLight snacks and refreshments are included in the ticket price. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID POLICIES: \nStaff and participants must wear face masks. Ocean Institute has increased the frequency of sanitation on public surfaces – door handles\, restrooms\, etc. Restrooms are available on-site at the Ocean Institute. SUMMARY:Distinguished Speaker Series: Marah j. Hardt (Sex in the Sea)
DESCRIPTION:Distinguished Speaker: Marah J. Hardt!\nSex in the Sea uniquely connects the timeless topic of sex with the timely issue of sustainable oceans. Through overfishing\, climate change\, and ocean pollution we are disrupting the creative procreation that drives the wild abundance of life in the ocean. \nForget the Kama Sutra. When it comes to inventive sex acts\, just look to the sea. There we find the elaborate mating rituals of armored lobsters; giant right whales engaging in a lively threesome whilst holding their breath; full moon sex parties of groupers and daily mating blitzes by blueheaded wrasse. Deep-sea squid perform inverted 69s\, while hermaphrodite sea slugs link up in giant sex loops. From doubly endowed sharks to the maze-like vaginas of some whales\, Sex in the Sea is a journey unlike any other to explore the staggering ways life begets life beneath the waves. \n \n \n \n \n \n Tuesday\, February 22nd – A Virtual Event!  \n6:00pm – 8:00pm \n$10  – General \n$5 – Sea Star and above members \nSea Star and above members: use coupon code speaker+member number (ex: speaker100101011) \nJoin us from home for this VIRTUAL Distinguished Speaker Series event!
