These ships were known for their speed and were used for smuggling. The ship is 118 feet long with a rig height of 100 feet… and 5\,000 square feet of sail! \nIt was Dennis Holland’s dream to build an accurate replica from the period when America fought for independence. These ships were known for their speed and were used for smuggling. The ship is 118 feet long with a rig height of 100 feet… and 5\,000 square feet of sail! \nIt was Dennis Holland’s dream to build an accurate replica from the period when America fought for independence. Armed with talent\, determination\, little money and plans he purchased from the Smithsonian Institution\, he laid the keel in his Orange County yard on May 2\, 1970. Thirteen years later\, this fast privateer was launched and continues to sail the ocean. Everywhere you look on board is the craftsmanship and pride of early America. \nFormerly the Pilgrim of Newport\, the re-named Spirit of Dana Point is an excellent teaching platform where students directly experience life at sea as it has been for hundreds of years.  The 118-ft. schooner is used for living history and at-sea maritime programs throughout the year. \nThe Spirit of Dana Point is also available for public and private charters\, coastal sails\, corporate team building\, and filming opportunities. \nFor private charters\, events or wedding onboard the Spirit of Dana Point please e-mail: events@oceaninstitute.org \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Click here for our Refund and Ticket Transfer Policy.

Join us for this Q & A style event to learn all about the progression of women in this athletic field. \n \n \n \n \n \n Wednesday\, April 5th \n6:00pm – 8:00pm \nDoors open at 5:30pm\, talk begins at 6:00pm \n$10  – General \nFREE – Members \nFREE – Students (with Valid ID) \n \n \n Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About Joyce Hoffman: \n\n\n\n\n  \nHoffman has been a trailblazer in the surfing world from her teens. She broke new ground as a woman from the day she first paddled into the surf in front of her parents’ home in Capistrano Beach. Now 75\, Hoffman is sharing memories of her adventures as a woman in a predominantly male sport.   \nThroughout her career she has won many championships. The City of Dana Point recently unveiled a bronze statue of her likeness. It is displayed in Waterman’s Plaza among the likenesses of other surfing legends Hobie Alter\, Phil Edwards and Bruce Brown. And again\, Hoffman is the first woman to be so honored. In fact\, Hoffman’s statue is believed to be the first life-sized statue of a female surfer in the country.  \nAmong her accolades:   \n\nShe was the first American to win the International Surfing Association’s World Championships in 1965 and 1966. \nShe won the United States Surfing Championships in 1965\, 1966\, 1967 and 1971. \n\n\nShe won the Makaha International in 1964 and 1966\, and the Laguna Masters in 1965 and 1967. \nShe was the first woman documented to surf the Pipeline. \nIn 1994 Hoffman became the only female in the first class inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame in Huntington Beach.  \n\n“As a highly accomplished woman in a male-dominated sport\, Joyce is a positive role model for young women everywhere\,” says Ocean Institute CEO and President Wendy Marshall. “She personifies the characteristics and enthusiasm the Ocean Institute strives to encourage among kids who come here to learn about the ocean. It’s an honor to have her with us as a Distinguished Speaker.”
