Discover their vital role in sustaining life and the perilous impact of their dark side: harmful algal blooms (HABs) that threaten marine life and human health. In this enlightening talk\, Dr. Smith will explore the increasing global occurrence of HABs\, their effects on southern California’s waters\, and the cutting-edge research aimed at mitigating their impact. Join us for a journey into the microscopic world\, where the smallest organisms tell the ocean’s biggest stories. \n \n \n \n \n \n Wednesday\, April 3 \n5:30 pm – 8:00 pm \nDoors open at 5:30 pm\, and talk begins at 6:00 pm \n$10  – General \nFREE – Members \nFREE – Students (with Valid ID) \n \n \n Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About Dr. Jayme Smith: \nWith a storied career dedicated to the study of HABs\, Dr. Smith’s research focuses on understanding the conditions that foster these toxic events in marine and freshwater systems\, and their broader ecological and health impacts. Having earned her Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Southern California\, Dr. Smith has worked collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team of researchers and resource managers to make exciting advancements in HAB monitoring and research in California. Her talk promises to takeattendees on a deep dive into the world of phytoplankton\, the foundational organisms of the marine food web\, their role in oxygen production\, and the dual threat they pose through the production of harmful toxins. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Click here for our Refund and Ticket Transfer Policy.

SUMMARY:Behind the Scenes Spirit Restoration Tour
DESCRIPTION:Come aboard the Spirit of Dana Point and learn all about her history along with the restoration process. This dockside guided tour will take you into the lives of those who work so relentlessly to keep her sea worthy.\nTickets: $25\n \n Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Spirit of Dana Point \nThe Spirit of Dana Point is a traditionally built replica of a 1770s privateer schooner used during the American Revolution. These ships were known for their speed and were used for smuggling. The ship is 118 feet long with a rig height of 100 feet… and 5\,000 square feet of sail! \nIt was Dennis Holland’s dream to build an accurate replica from the period when America fought for independence. Armed with talent\, determination\, little money and plans he purchased from the Smithsonian Institution\, he laid the keel in his Orange County yard on May 2\, 1970. Thirteen years later\, this fast privateer was launched and continues to sail the ocean. Everywhere you look on board is the craftsmanship and pride of early America. \nFormerly the Pilgrim of Newport\, the re-named Spirit of Dana Point is an excellent teaching platform where students directly experience life at sea as it has been for hundreds of years.  The 118-ft. schooner is used for living history and at-sea maritime programs throughout the year. \nThe Spirit of Dana Point is also available for public and private charters\, coastal sails\, corporate team building\, and filming opportunities. \nFor private charters\, events or wedding onboard the Spirit of Dana Point please e-mail: events@oceaninstitute.org \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Click here for our Refund and Ticket Transfer Policy.

From touching sea stars to observing majestic marine mammals for the first time; spending the night under the stars on our Surf Deck or awakening a child’s curiosity aboard our tall ship\, Spirit of Dana Point\, our work changes the way children see themselves and their world. \nCan you pinpoint a moment in your life that changed everything? \nOcean Institute does not simply change a day in a child’s life\, we change the perception of what life has to offer. Experiences\, possibilities\, educational pathways\, career options\, and an individual’s power to support a healthy environment are broadened in a matter of hours through sophisticated resources\, a stunning location\, and our talented and passionate staff. \nThis model of engagement is an expression of support from the community. Since 1977\, our generous philanthropic and corporate neighbors have enabled life-changing moments for well over 1 million students!  \nWe humbly invite you to join with us and our rich history of supporters in creating the moment that changes everything! \n \nDr. Wendy Marshall \nPresident and CEO
